CELT – Promoting Sustainable Living and Nature Conservation
CELT, founded in 2001, is a national charity for environmental education and training and is an award-winning
provider of training in traditional and ecological skills, focused on promoting caring for the environment and living in a sustainable manner by using locally sourced natural and recycled materials to make the things we need – tools, buildings, furniture, utensils, sports equipment and toys.
The CELT ‘Weekend in the Woods’ events are held 2 – 3 times a year at Slieve Aughty Centre (Loughrea, Co. Galway) attracting 100’s of participants interested in learning ecological and traditional skills and knowledge and also because of the scenic rural location and opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in between learning modules.
CELT is a member of AONTAS (National Association for Adult Education), achieving Special Commendation in their
Star Awards (2007) and has won numerous awards from the Heritage Council for traditional skills training and for
biodiversity projects (every year, 2002 – 2014) and were also first runners-up in the national Green Awards 2013
and in the eco-communities section of the national Pride of Place competition 2014.

Give the gift of a new hobby!
I personally found the fused glass very exciting as you can add other materials to the process embedding it into the glass itself to create really bespoke pieces that make great gifts or practical applications in the home or business – indeed Linda showed me a project she was working on at the time which involved embedding a tiny kettle into a glass door handle for a UK based restaurant – brilliant!
Christmas gift vouchers can be used for a weekend at the Glasshouse, Westport, either learning Glass Fusing or Stained Glass and cost €180. This includes not only the course but all materials too.
Vouchers can be used for any weekend course during the year. New courses start in March 2015.
Stained Glass Weekend WestPort
Have you time to fit a Stained Glass weekend into your life before the summer ends? If you want to learn how to make stained Glass there is a course coming up on the 13&14 September.
We will be doing a little bit of Fusing during the course too (because it’s fun!).
When: 13 & 14 September
Price: €80pp – Payable via website
Where: BlueGlasshouse.com (WestPort)
Who: Linda Mulloy 087 7981123, email firstname.lastname@example.org
Commission a truly beautiful traditional or contemporary stained glass panel or learn the skills for making your own.
We teach traditional methods of making stained glass, leading (leaded lights) and the copper foil technique. The courses are held in our Studio on The Quay and are very ‘hands-on’, inspiring and great fun!
People often come back after taking the basic course to make more ambitious pieces such as a lampshade or a panel for a specific window in their home.
You don’t need to have any prior experience or be particularly artistic to take our courses. You will quickly find out how good coloured glass looks when the light shines through it; you’ll be surprised at what skills you develop as your enthusiasm grows.
Most of our courses are suitable for beginners and improvers. We keep our groups small (usually 6 participants) to ensure you can work at your own speed, learning from each other throughout the course.

Relaxed after yesterdays’ seaweed bath I headed off to the beautiful town of Westport Co Mayo to meet up with Linda Mulloy of The GlassHouse Studio.
Linda offers regular stained and fused glass workshops as well as glass jewelry making workshops from her idyllically located studio for beginners, and advanced.
Whilst my mum has once tried her hand – rather successfully I might add – at stained glass lampshade making I was surprised by the variety of options available.
Linda advises to leave any preconceptions behind and instead focus on a abstract idea of a sunset (for example) using reds, oranges, blues rather than trying to make an exact picture of a sunset, both because it is difficult to make definite shapes with glass but also, and more importantly, to let the creative juices flow.
Showing me some sample so her work and work carried out by attendees Linda also mentioned a project that she is currently working on, creating a bespoke glass door handle for a Brighton based cafe/salvage yard which will have a tiny delicate teapot encased within the handle!
Much to inspire and get creative with…
