How it Began…
Finding it difficult to source foraging type events online I decided to begin Eco Active in 2013.
I worked with lot’s of interesting people during those formative years blogging their events and workshops including Mary White of Blackstairs EcoTrails, Bumble Bee Flowers, Crann Og Eco Stay, Three Towers amongst many others and attended many Ecotourism Conferences always promoting my members and Nominating them for Awards – one of which Clifden Eco Camping won in 2014!
I organised an EcoTour of Ireland meeting people such as Rock Farm Slane and Boyne Valley Activities who were striving to create sustainable eco-friendly businesses and was interviewed by Damien O’Reilly of RTE Countrywide Radio show who followed my progress, with Mary Mulvey of Eco Tourism Ireland live from a studio in Sligo!
With new experiences being added daily make sure to check back soon or get in touch if you’re looking for something in particular.

Pioneer Bushcraft Ireland
Pioneer Bushcraft is all about teaching informative, relevant and extremely practical courses. The courses are short to facilitate people who do not have the time or inclination to spend a lot of money on longer duration bushcraft or nature courses – but who still want a high quality outdoor experience.
Sean Fagan offers a variety of regular workshops including:
- Urban Botany of Dublin City
- Bull Island Birdwatching Tour
- Coastal Foraging & Rocky Shore Ecology – Balbriggan
- Native Woodland Masterclass – Enniskerry
- Primitive & Modern Fire Skills Workshop – Enniskerry
- Basic Map & Compass Navigation Skills – Bray
There are many interpretations of Bushcraft. So many, it’s impossible to give a definitive answer as to what Bushcraft is – partly because Bushcraft is very personal to the individual. For me, Bushcraft is a way of getting closer to nature…
Contact – meaningful contact, with nature allows empathy and sensitivity towards nature to flourish where it may have been absent – and Bushcraft is one of the best ways I know to facilitate a passion for the great outdoors.

Bushcraft For Groups
Bushcraft skills are available to book for groups over 10 people.
I recently went along to one such event with Aebhric and Andy in Co Wicklow.
As I was only partaking for only a few hours I missed out on some of the events but took note of what had taken place before my arrival.
The group had been taught how to light a fire without matches or lighter and would be in the middle of something when they were asked to quickly light a fire again – the idea was to ensure they could have a successful fire going within 3-5 minutes in case of very cold weather.
We also learnt a bit about foraging for salads and how to make a shelter to sleep in that would protect you from the elements using found branches and fronds.
I had to leave then but the guys were busy boiling water and preparing their dinner which they would cook over an open fire sleeping out under the stars that night with more to learn the next morning- I wish I could have stayed – maybe next time!
